           Lithium-Ion Batteries are becoming more popular in UPS systems. Originally they were tried in small UPS systems but now are also being used in larger data center UPS systems. Although the use of Lithion-Ion Batteries is becoming more popular for UPS systems, lead-acid batteries are still dominant after being used successfully for years.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Advantages
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Lithium-Ion Batteries have advantages over valve regulated Lead Acid Batteries currently used in UPS systems.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Longer Life Span up to 10- 15 years vs 3 to 5 years, meaning lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Smaller size and weight
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           While there are many advantages, there are still some significant drawbacks.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;

            Current cost is still high (1.5 to 10 times more)
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Must be carefully managed to reduce the potential for Thermal Runaway.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Can not be retrofitted into existing Lead Acid applications
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Battery Management Systems must be used (which can also be a benefit)
           &#xD;

            Tighter restrictions and costs for transportation
           &#xD;

           Other Considerations
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            If a slightly higher initial price for your UPS is not a stumbling block and Total Cost of Ownership is most important then a Litium-Ion UPS maybe the solution. Some manufacturers are guaranteeing the batteries for the life of the UPS which could be 10 to 15 years. One less thing to worry about.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

      <title>Energy Storage Part 1: Types of Storage Systems</title>

           Why do we need energy storage?

           Our electrical energy used in our homes, businesses and factories is generated as we need it. If demand goes up Electrical Plants generate more electricity. But if the demand goes higher than currently available from local power plants electrical energy must be brought in via high voltage transmission lines from other generating facilities. This process is expensive and less reliable. Usually this high demand is only necessary for a few hours and then drops to a normal levels again. By storing energy by various means at the local level, it can be ready to augment existing generation during high peak demands.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This process provides a low cost source of electricity and more reliable. In addition it does not require the need to build new power plants which are very expensive and are very difficult to get approved through regulatory red tape. Another increasingly important reason for energy storage is that much of our power is from renewable resources such as solar, which do not produce a consistent amount of energy throughout the day. For example solar is only good during daylight hours and only produces at maximum efficiency on clear days. Similarly, wind power only produces on windy days. If on a hot windy day such as Santa Ana conditions in Southern California not all of the energy produced can be used and goes to waste. However with an energy storage system, excess electricity can be stored during the day and used at night in the absence of sun and wind.

            Although Lead-Acid batteries have been used for years, Lithium-Ion batteries are giving a renewed interest since they last up to ten years, provide large output currents, and quickly recharge.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Hydroelectric:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            This process stores water from rivers behind dams and then controls the output flow to generate reliable electricity. This process has been in use for years and works great in states with significant rain fall and mountainous terrain. More advanced Systems pump water from a lower lake during the night with low cost electricity and then release water from the upper lake during the day to add to the utility.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Thermal:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            During night time hours when electricity is the cheapest, a refrigerator/freezer is used to create ice. During prime time daylight hours the melting ice is used to air condition buildings without additional building air conditioning and saving electricity.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Compressed Air:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Low cost, off hour utility energy is used to compress air in large tanks or underground vaults at high pressure. Then during peak energy requirements the compressed air is used to rotate a generator and provide additional electricity.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Flywheels:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Flywheels have been used for backup power for many years. During normal operation electricity is used to turn the flywheel. When power is lost, the flywheel continues to spin for some time generating electricity. This can be used for backup or to provide additional power during high usage times. Their drawback is the limited amount of time that they can run without additional power.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;

            Super Capacitors:

           These devices can store energy and release as needed. Capacitors have been used for years in electronic equipment to smooth the power to electrical circuits. New technology is allowing them to be used for large scale storage applications.

           Do we need storage? The simple answer is yes! But we must break down the different uses to determine how important energy storage really is. Here is a list of the most common uses:

           Utilities

           Much research and development is going into utility level energy storage using various types of batteries, hydroelectric from rivers and dams, thermal storage, compressed air, flywheels and super capacitors. The most research appears to be going into different types of batteries. This includes large banks of small batteries like lithium-ion to very large single cell batteries using various types of dialectrics such as salt water. These devices can store into the Megawatt range making them very useful for smoothing peak cycle requirements of utility power.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Utilities are implementing large scale energy storage in many locations. By utilizing stored energy at peak demand, they can eliminate the need to build addition generating plants. New power plants are very expensive and must go through a mountain of red tape to meet environmental regulations.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Commercial
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           One of the most economical uses of battery storage is for peak shaving at commercial facilities. Unlike residential billing, commercial users are billed based on their peak demands during the prior year. This peak demand sets the Kilowatt per hour rate for the future. Lowering the peak demand lowers the rate and therefore the entire bill for the following year.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Energy storage systems will automatically supply power during high usage times like mid-afternoon when air conditioners are working hard and production is in full swing. Batteries are then recharged by lower cost electricity at night or by solar arrays. By utilizing the stored energy at these peak times reduces the peak demand and the rate for the entire year. This system can also provide backup power during a utility failure. Return on investment (ROI) for these systems is usually very good.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Residential:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Less economical but certainly good for the environment is a residential battery storage system used in conjunction with a solar system. These systems can be cost effective in areas where the rate is high for kilowatt hours. These can be justified in several ways:

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Photo-Voltaic (PV) Self Consumption:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This system is designed to provide all or most of the power for the residence. Excess solar energy produced is stored in batteries. This stored energy is used during the night and times of low solar production. This keeps the costs from purchased energy to a minimum.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Time of Use (TOU):
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When the utility bills by TOU, your rate changes during the day with the most expensive power available during peak afternoon and early evening.  By using the the battery system in conjunction with the solar panels to power the house during these high cost times, overall utility costs can be kept to a minimum.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Universal Residential:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This system requires all residential users to have battery based energy storage tied to their home utility. The systems are either supplied by the government or the utility companies. These smart storage devices are all connected and can work independently or controlled as a group by the power company to supply power back into the grid during times of peak demand. This could eliminate the need for additional power plants and quickly justifies the initial cost.

           Centralized emergency lighting inverters are used to provide backup power to lighting systems for a minimum of 90 minutes in the event of a utility failure. Emergency lighting is required by law in areas where it is necessary for safe exit of buildings, parking garages, public arena’s and stadiums. Look for equipment that is UL 924 listed. It is also useful for critical areas that need to continue operations without interruption of lighting.

           Crowds wait for hours as the airport tries to bring the power and computer systems back up after a facility wide failure.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           What happened to the redundant system that was installed?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The answer appears to be that the “redundant system” still had single points of possible failure. In this case there were actually several. Although they had redundant power backup batteries (UPS systems) and generators, the single point of failure was the transfer switch (switch gear). This system switches from the utility power to the UPS/generator system during an outage. Although very robust, occasionally switch gear does fail. The second problem was that the two sets of wiring to the redundant backup systems were bundled and run along the same route from the switch gear. When the switch gear caught fire from over heating, it took out both sets of wiring supplying power to the airport.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Could this problem been avoided?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Of course it could have. To make a truly redundant fail safe system, there will need to be two feeds from the utility. One is from the local transformer on site and another from a different utility circuit. Then the two feeds are fed through redundant switch gear and two separate inputs on the UPS systems.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Why wasn’t this done?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Most likely it was due to cost. However, the cost of the failure to their computer systems, stranded passengers and lost revenue far exceeds the initial additional costs.       <title>What Type of UPS Do You Need?</title>

           There are several types of UPS systems each with their own unique advantages. Today we will describe two of the most common.
          &#xD;

           The most small UPS systems, 150 to 3000VA are Line Interactive design. Larger systems will use an Online design but in many cases both are available. So which should you have?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Line Interactive Design:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           This topology is relatively simple. The power from the utility powers the load as long as it is within certain voltage and frequency limits. In older UPS systems, if the utility goes outside of this range, then the inverter turns on supplying power to the load and discharging the batteries. In current designs, internal circuitry will correct for minor variations in the voltage from the utility without going to battery. This preserves the batteries for a true power failure. Since the Inverter only turns on when there is a power failure, there is a switch over time of about 2 to 6 mseconds. Most modern computers can easily handle this delay.            Online UPS Systems
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Although slightly more expensive, the added protection may be worth it. Online systems run their inverter at all times from the input utility or the batteries, providing regulated power to the load. Since the inverter is always powering the load, the voltage and frequency can be carefully controlled and are not affected by fluctuations in the utility. In addition, if the load demands more power than available from the UPS, the system will transfer to bypass allowing the load to be powered directly from the utility. The unit will also go into bypass if there is a failure of the UPS circuitry ensuring the load will not be dropped if overloaded or even if the unit malfunctions. Below is the block diagram.
